That discussion looks rather similar to the discussion that has been going on for the past few years in the United States, over whether or not there is really a democracy left in the United States or only oligarchy or plutocracy--something like with Russia, perhaps, but with more resources for the oligarchs to play with. That discussion was going on even before Donald Trump.
I have seen it said that the reason or part of the reason that the United States should defend Israel with major violence is because "Israel is the only democracy" in its part of the world. I think that that argument is gone, if indeed it was ever real, that is, if Israel ever was a democracy. Most likely you will understand what I have just said if you read the article.
