I mentioned a bit ago that some interesting news articles are at the top at Consortium News.

This is one.  I strongly recommend studying the whole thing hard, because that will, I hope and believe, help you to decide whom to believe in all the confusion about a few things that have been going on lately.

You may have heard something about the recent article in The Washington Post about Russia having hacked into the U.S. elections.  A good friend sent me the link to that piece.  The problem is that the piece was unsubstantiated.  Despite its being unsubstantiated, I have been seeing mention of it over and over in the past few days.  That is a bad thing.  Hopefully this will help, at least as far as you and I are concerned.

I can add that, according to Mr. Henningsen, a number of news sources that I have come to regard as excellent over the past 10 years or so are among the damned in that Washington Post article.  They include, among others whose names you may recognize when you get to them, TruthOut and TruthDig, which you too may know are the life works of very honest American patriots in the truest sense, people who love their country and hate to see it being ruined, even by powerful Americans like Richard Cheney, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton.  I leave out Donald Trump only because he has not been in charge of any of it. Yet.  His appointments certainly do not bode well for anybody we know.  There seem to be many who are not about to roll over and play dead with him.  Thank you Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.  No fakers there either, for sure.

The above article does review some of the mythology about Russia that has been generated under the administration of President Barack Obama with the help of Hillary Clinton.  The story they tell is about Russia having been the aggressor in the Ukraine and having invaded and taken over Crimea.  The Obama and Clinton story is false, and all the world knows that that story is false with the exception of the many Americans who have "drunk the Kool-Aid," as the saying goes.

I shared out the following stories in March 2014 as things were happening in the Ukraine and the stories were current.  The links still work.  I have read much news about the Ukraine and have shared big bits of it before and since.  I am giving you below one of my messages from March 2014 in its entirety in addition to some links from another message that I sent.  Hopefully you may feel that you are getting the real story or that you will be reminded of what you know.

The elected Ukraine president and government were aligning with Russia economically.  The bankers in charge of the U.S. did not care for that.  The U.S. invaded the Ukraine under the name NATO and overthrew the Ukraine government with the help of native Ukrainian Nazi gangs hired by the U.S.  They were U.S. terrorists, in other words.  The new Ukraine U.S. puppet leader led a change in the law so that the Russian people who were the citizens of the portion of the Ukraine known as Crimea were no longer to be allowed to speak their native Russian, only English.  They needed help against the evil being perpetuated against them by my poor greedy country, insatiably greedy or so it appears in various parts of the world.

Note that there are a number of recent news items at Consortium News that are of significant interest and which contradict some things that you might have heard elsewhere.  You may recall that Consortium News has published articles by some rather famous news people, famous for their honesty in the face of the U.S. government and its bosses and their professional propagandists.

I keep reminding myself that I am retired and that I have lots of good music to play and lots of good books to read.  Maybe I will do more of that and less of this.  If you are younger than I am I do hope that you will pay attention and talk about the evils that our poor country is engaged in regularly as a country rather than letting them be hidden.  There must be other ways to increase GDP besides killing and thieving.

Besides the U.S. soldier being missing from his post at the hotline, another thing that went wrong, just to mention it once again here in passing here to remind you, was the U.S. military and armaments companies and employees and contractors being involved in Syria in the first place.  They have no right.  As you will recall, the Russian military does have a right, being there, as it is, at the request of the Syrian government.

This week let us remember Cuba, another country where my sad country never had a right trying to control things in the name of false propaganda about economics but went ahead tried anyway, against all that is moral by any standard except "Might Makes Right."  We do not have to believe in that standard just because some other people believe in it and act upon it.

Pick one or more or find one of your own that is serious and do what you can to fight and keep fighting against becoming resigned to the world according to Donald Trump, whatever that might turn out to be.  Yes, supporting your favorite local community organization(s) counts, certainly.  I hope you can add something like one or more of the above out of concern for our country as a whole.

In the last few years, psychologists and researchers have been digging up hard data on a question previously left to philosophers: What makes us happy? Researchers like the father-son team Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diener, Stanford psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky, and ethicist Stephen Post have studied people all over the world to find out how things like money, attitude, culture, memory, health, altruism, and our day-to-day habits affect our well-being. The emerging field of positive psychology is bursting with new findings that suggest your actions can have a significant effect on your happiness and satisfaction with life. Here are 10 scientifically proven strategies for getting happy.

1. Savor Everyday Moments

Pause now and then to smell a rose or watch children at play. Study participants who took time to “savor” ordinary events that they normally hurried through, or to think back on pleasant moments from their day, “showed significant increases in happiness and reductions in depression,” says psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky.

2. Avoid Comparisons

While keeping up with the Joneses is part of American culture, comparing ourselves with others can be damaging to happiness and self-esteem. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, focusing on our own personal achievement leads to greater satisfaction, according to Lyubomirsky.

3. Put Money Low on the List

People who put money high on their priority list are more at risk for depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, according to researchers Tim Kasser and Richard Ryan. Their findings hold true across nations and cultures. “The more we seek satisfactions in material goods, the less we find them there,” Ryan says. “The satisfaction has a short half-life -- it’s very fleeting.” Money-seekers also score lower on tests of vitality and self-actualization.

4. Have Meaningful Goals

“People who strive for something significant, whether it’s learning a new craft or raising moral children, are far happier than those who don’t have strong dreams or aspirations,” say Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diener. “As humans, we actually require a sense of meaning to thrive.” Harvard’s resident happiness professor, Tal Ben-Shahar, agrees, “Happiness lies at the intersection between pleasure and meaning. Whether at work or at home, the goal is to engage in activities that are both personally significant and enjoyable.”

5. Take Initiative at Work

How happy you are at work depends in part on how much initiative you take. Researcher Amy Wrzesniewski says that when we express creativity, help others, suggest improvements, or do additional tasks on the job, we make our work more rewarding and feel more in control.

6. Make Friends, Treasure Family

Happier people tend to have good families, friends, and supportive relationships, say Diener and Biswas-Diener. But it’s not enough to be the life of the party if you’re surrounded by shallow acquaintances. “We don’t just need relationships, we need close ones” that involve understanding and caring.

7. Smile Even When You Don’t Feel Like It

It sounds simple, but it works. “Happy people…see possibilities, opportunities, and success. When they think of the future, they are optimistic, and when they review the past, they tend to savor the high points,” say Diener and Biswas-Diener. Even if you weren’t born looking at the glass as half-full, with practice, a positive outlook can become a habit.

8. Say Thank You Like You Mean It

People who keep gratitude journals on a weekly basis are healthier, more optimistic, and more likely to make progress toward achieving personal goals, according to author Robert Emmons. Research by Martin Seligman, founder of positive psychology, revealed that people who write “gratitude letters” to someone who made a difference in their lives score higher on happiness, and lower on depression -- and the effect lasts for weeks.

9. Get Out and Exercise

A Duke University study shows that exercise may be just as effective as drugs in treating depression, without all the side effects and expense. Other research shows that in addition to health benefits, regular exercise offers a sense of accomplishment and opportunity for social interaction, releases feel-good endorphins, and boosts self-esteem.

10. Give It Away, Give It Away Now!

Make altruism and giving part of your life, and be purposeful about it. Researcher Stephen Post says helping a neighbor, volunteering, or donating goods and services results in a “helper’s high,” and you get more health benefits than you would from exercise or quitting smoking. Listening to a friend, passing on your skills, celebrating others’ successes, and forgiveness also contribute to happiness, he says. Researcher Elizabeth Dunn found that those who spend money on others reported much greater happiness than those who spend it on themselves.

sent 11/11/16 Trump--the hugest thing to cheer about

My two biggest concerns about our nation and the world have been the policies about global heating and about warmongering, not necessarily in that order.  Of course I have other concerns as well, but those two tower over everything else.

There is no good news about policies related to the rapid global heating that is going on.

But there is GREAT news about anticipated changes to our nation's warmongering.  This might be better than I had dared to spend much time dreaming of, really.  You know all about that if you have read just a couple of my past messages.

I very much doubt that it is entirely accurate to say that President-elect Trump is "likely to 'endorse' Russia's policy of bombing rebels to the negotiating table."  But that is not the point at all.  The point is that two wrongs have not made and will not make a right.  For the U.S. to make a turnaround and stop spending huge resources in trying to depose a foreign government for the selfish purposes of those who make a lot of money at that sort of thing, and of some who have a religious interest in pushing for the expansion of the borders of Israel, would be a great thing.  Syria has a legal government even though President Assad might have almost as bad a reputation among some as does President-elect Donald Trump.  Syria has had a formal relationship with Russia for many years as a protectorate, I believe since well before the United States started pushing its way in.  I am a bit uncertain as to when it was that the United States started pushing its way in.  It may have been in the 1940s.  See "An Urgently Necessary Briefing on Syria," by Gary Leupp, CounterPunch, October 14, 2016, link first sent to you on October 18th.

Overall, I think that what is outlined in the article dated today from theguardian would reduce the violence and the killing overall even if it would not help the desires of people who are known as super-aggressive Israel leaders to "keep the grass mowed."  We will see how it all develops.  There are many people involved, referring mainly to the powerful people, some members of the Federal government, some in the military, and some in the war materials and the banking industries.

I do wish the all the best for all of the U.S. veterans, most especially for those who have come home.

Here are two very different articles about the Hillary Clinton machine.

1. This by our well-known Thomas Frank, author of many books, the most famous probably being The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Rule (2008) (paperback The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Ruined Government, Enriched Themselves, and Beggared the Nation 2009), which I may have written to you about back then.  He now writes about what the newly John Podesta emails tell us about Hillary Clinton and her friends: "Forget the FBI cache; the Podesta emails show how America is run," The Guardian, October 31, 2016.  Thank you dear Julian Assange, who as usual did not steal the emails but did publish them for our benefit.

2. This presents seemingly strong arguments for voting for Hillary Clinton.  "Pragmatism," by retired US Navy Chief Warrant Officer Jim Wright, November 1, 2016.  I am surprised at his favoring Hillary Clinton so strongly, since he has written in opposition to the United States operating out of nothing but greed in foreign countries, but he ignores that in this article.  He implies that the Republican Party is even worse overall in that particular respect.  I do not know about the Republican Party members on the whole being worse war hawks/warmongers than Hillary Clinton is personally--I think she is that bad, but I tend to agree with him more on other issues, enough to recommend this particular writing as worth reading, at least, taking it primarily as very reasonable opposition to Donald Trump and the Republican Party platform on the whole.  I do see the Republican Party platform as much more silly, really, thinking now of its efforts to appeal to Ayn Randians at the same time the new Donald Trump budget proposal is being projected by the experts to increase the Federal debt by leaps and bounds, far more than the Hillary Clinton budget proposal is expected to do.  I do not know about that, but, just sayin', the Republicans do sound silly and worse for that and other reasons--unless of course if you just hate the idea of a woman being President no matter what.

I am still leaning toward voting for integrity--see below--but I pretty much take it as a given that Hillary Clinton is going to take New York state.  I can vote for Jill Stein in New York state and vote for Democratic Party candidates for all of the lower offices.  I would like it if the Democratic Party took the House as well as the Senate.
