So is there a way to advocate for trade without advocating for killing people who don’t want to trade with us? Or for being willing to trade with people who we find awful because killing unpleasant regimes with kindness is better than killing them with bombs? And how do we deal with the kind of backlash that engagement provokes, which is going to come in the form of terrorism of various stripes?
I remember Dave Van Ronk very well, along with a number of other folk singers of the early 1960s. I had no idea that he was an FBI target. I do remember having heard speculation, at least, that the FBI had a file on me because of my activities with the Draft Counseling Center of Greater Buffalo just a few years later. For two (2) years I was doing my duty to my country that way at very low pay instead of helping to damage my country by being part of the Vietnam War. Having the draft and the resistance to it helped with keeping the extreme wealthy somewhat under control. Happily for them they found a way around needing a draft.
