It has been rather powerful in the successful fights against things
like SOPA in the
past. They do that by 1) working very hard at it and 2) getting
help every which way possible.
I got this today from Josh Levy of FreePress.net. The very serious
free press and open Internet problem with what we know of the
current form of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a very
different aspect from some of the other very serious problems I had
been focusing on lately. So since it is clear that we want the TPP
to fail, or so I hope, let us join in coming at the problem from
every possible direction.

Dear Larry,
A couple of months ago we told you about the Trans-Pacific
Partnership, a hush-hush trade pact that threatens millions of
Internet users’ rights to connect and communicate.
The TPP is on a fast track to getting U.S. approval without any
public review or input. It would let corporations monitor our online
activities, cut off our Internet access, delete content and impose
fines.
The Internet is already under siege thanks to a federal court’s
recent decision to gut the Net Neutrality protections. The Free
Press Action Fund is fighting to win back the Internet on that front
— and today we’re
joining with our friends at OpenMedia to stop the TPP.
The TPP caters to corporate interests that don’t care about our
digital rights. Consider the section on intellectual property, which
allows the kinds of online speech restrictions that many of you
protested when they appeared in the Stop Online Piracy Act.
Hollywood lobbyist Chris Dodd tried to ram SOPA through, and he’s
using the same strong-arm tactics with the TPP. He offered the usual
corporate spin following Tuesday’s State of the Union speech,
claiming the TPP would “bolster investment, encourage economic
development, and create jobs around the world.”
He forgot to mention how the TPP would restrict online speech,
undermine our privacy rights and limit innovation.
We Stopped SOPA. Let’s
Stop the TPP.
Former U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk has admitted that if the
public knew about the TPP, there’s no way it would pass.
Join our friends at OpenMedia and tell Congress and the White House
to reject the TPP.
