That is what Jeremy Scahill says in this wonderful Democracy Now! interview with him and Glenn Greenwald about their visions for their new media site The Intercept with Linda Poitras and with the other journalists they have rounded up to work with them. It's about journalists pushing back against a climate of fear that our United States government has been working to generate among journalists (February 7, 2014 Salon interview)--warning, it contains the f-word). Journalists rely on the First Amendment, which says Congress shall make no law limiting the right of free speech. "No law" is simple. It means NO law. Actually at least one exception was created some time back. I recall that after argument it was held reasonable to make it illegal to yell "fire" in a crowded theater.
But traditionally and by law journalists have been protected from being labelled criminals for publishing the news. And they should be so protected. That provision is a part of how some very serious people did their best to make this country different from old England where the King could do anything he pleased. This is Glenn Greenwald at Brown University on the topic of the United States Constitution, about which he is one of the recognized experts.
