According to two recent studies that Mr. Krugman cites and to which he provides links, it is NOT TRUE that the only way to limit carbon emissions is to bring an end to economic growth. "[It is] now easier to to slash emissions and stay powered up than seemed possible even a few years ago, and reduced emissions would produce large benefits in the short-to-medium run. So saving the planet would be cheap and maybe even come free."
WHAT STANDS IN THE WAY is 1) the personal interests of those like the Koch Brothers--(link)--who are employed in the production and sale of fossil fuels, and 2) the erroneous belief on the part of many that the change cannot be made. Slowing it down is not an absolute impossibility after all.
That's the "shocking news." :-)

The word is, you may have heard, the state heads of China and India are not coming after all,* our President was just stopping in for lunch, I think it was, and the big corporations are well in control of whatever is going to happen. But I might take glance or so, just to admire the demonstrators for trying to do something. And hey, their fortitude, stamina, and persistence might matter, especially if they can manage to get too big to ignore.
