Please keep it in the forefront of your mind as you read this and hear the word "Syria" or "Syrian" in the future, that this was done by the United States military, at the behest of Israel, for the sake of Israel's policy of expansion. See e.g. here. The occupied territories are not enough, from the points of view of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and of numerous members of the government leadership in the United States. The latter are referred to politely as "interventionists." Though not a Republican, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is a true believer interventionist with many such personal friends. I don't think they get how evil(!) are such policies.
