Among other things, I have been meditating today on some of the
writings of William Astore, carried over from last night. (See
below) I found his personal site, Bracing Views.
This very short writing of his from September 9, 2017 is perfect in my opinion: "Mom’s Wisdom on Religion." It seems to me that it fits perfectly with silent-meeting Quakerism, my closest institutional affiliation. Yes we do listen to and learn from each other, but ultimately we do not try to say what others "should" be doing. As William Astore says, it is: "You worry about your soul — I’ll worry about mine....

That distortion leads us to serious misjudgments.
I hope no one who's been part of any branch of the military feels that I am dissing him or her with this, because that is definitely no part of my sharing this with you. This article is altogether outside that framework--that is, the framework of putting anyone down. It's not about our current wars in particular. And it's also not particularly about how evil America has been. And William Astore reaffirms his appreciation for soldiers.

This is important. This disturbs me. It disturbs me because it might really explain why Donald Trump is President. Racism among "white" people at every economic level might really be it.
Anyone who was following me last fall knows that I strongly opposed Hillary Clinton because of her promise to start World War III. Despite his serious offensiveness, I might have been slightly less opposed to Donald Trump because of his seeming less likely to want to start World War III. I voted for Jill Stein partly because I agreed with her on things, and partly because Hillary Clinton's nomination in New York state was a foregone conclusion. My vote felt better, but it had no practical effect.
None of that had the slightest thing to do with racism. I swear.
I do wonder how much of a role two other factors played overall, those being: 1) planetary heating denial--Hillary Clinton took planetary heating and clean air and water seriously--and 2) Hillary Clinton's horrible foreign policy records both as Secretary of State and otherwise. Off the top of my head she is personally responsible for having destroyed at least two countries, Libya and Haiti.
Those factors are not part of the voting records, so I just do not know the size of the role that they played in the election.
So I cannot reject the picture that the brilliant Ta-Nehisi Coates has laid out.
So. I am still not about to start feeling ashamed of myself for my skin color. I guess the effect of this article might be that I will not dismiss out of hand the one or two people of African heritage that I might encounter who talk as though they are aware of all of the allegations including allegations about history that Ta-Nehisi Coates has put together.
If they get rude, though, when I listen without becoming ashamed, they can just stay away from me.
And I am still going to be paying attention to planetary heating and to the government of my poor country engaging in killing and thievery in foreign countries as well as here.

He promises them control of policy. It seems that it might be necessary to get out and stand in their way. There is a debate over whether or not that's a good idea, of course. Donald Trump for one has said that getting in their way physically it is not a good idea. But it is also said that this is a case where political action will not work. So, courage, right?

Naomi Klein is the famous author of the classic 2007 bestselling book, The Shock Doctrine, The Rise of Disaster Capitalism. Since then she has been invited to speak often in many places. With the help of 26 researchers, Naomi Klein provided heavy documentation about venture capitalists having destroyed the lives of people in a large number of small countries that I for one had never before heard of, over a period of years starting in the 1970s as I recall. The venture capitalists did that by providing big loans to country leaders, loans that the leaders were unable to repay. Then the venture capitalists forced the country leaders to force their citizens to work harder and to seriously reduce the living standards, which had been ok, to collect money with which to repay the loans. That involved the venture capitalists taking control of the governments. This was all totally real, not the slightest bit fiction.
You might know that Naomi Klein has written another well-known book, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate (2014). I leave it to you to read some of the 861 customer reviews there at Amazon and to decide whether or not to buy the book if you do not already have it. It is available in paperback, kindle, and hardcover.
There is another book by her that I have not read yet, No Is Not Enough: Resisting Trump's Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need (June 13, 2017). I see that there are 139 Amazon customer reviews so far.

I am a bit suspicious of this, really. One of Professor Walt's early criticisms in the paper linked above is the killing of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, the news of which gave many of us a huge sense of victory--about the only thing that has that has been Trump's doing since the November election. The TPP was going to take control of clean water and air out of the control of villages, towns, counties, and states. We were going to have to litigate our local concerns in a special court that was to have been set up in Brussels under the control of the extremely wealthy of the world. Bad!!! Many names big and small fought that devil for years, as I you will probably remember well. See e.g. sent 1/25/14 JANUARY 31ST DAY OF TPP ACTION; Obama and Michelle Bachmann Re: TPP Please Act and Take This Viral: actually got off my butt today...mission accomplished? no, not quite yet, please help
But that does not mean that Professor Walt is mistaken about everything that he wrote!
It is worthy of mention, even though only a small part of his new paper is focused on Israel, that the famous Stephen M. Walt caught my eye as the co-author, along with another professor at a different university, Walt Mearsheimer, of "The Israel Lobby," a famous paper that was published in March 2006 in the London Review of Books,. That is what I saw of them first. They had done very serious research--a secret survey of Congress as well as a long news analysis that I read very carefully back then--that showed that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) was the most influential lobby in the U.S. Congress, second only to the old folks lobby, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). Those influences may have changed, but I have not heard that they have changed. AIPAC is of serious interest to about one-third of American Jews, to the government of Israel, and to a segment of American Christianity known as the Christian Zionists. The ones who are influential in AIPAC are the seriously wealthy, not the average members. In 2007 Mearsheimer and Walt published a longer bestselling book, The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy.
In his new paper, also linked at the top, Prof. Walt does include a paragraph or so about current relationships between the United States and Israel. He is accurate according to other sources I have seen, and not inconsistent with his 2006 paper and 2007 book. Again, that paragraph is not the only thing of major importance in the new paper.
