IT'S ABOUT OPPOSING FAST-TRACKING THE TRANS-PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP (TPP) AGREEMENT--the hypothetical agreement with some of the secret proposed provisions under discussion by 12 countries having become visible, to an extent, to the world including us. I took a trip to Rochester, NY yesterday morning with a younger adult relative, to appear and speak at a television press conference in opposition to the fast-tracking of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. That fast-tracking proposal is being discussed in Congress this very week, right now! Press conferences sponsored by a variety of significant groups that have joined forces for this are going on all over the country this week in opposition to the House agreeing to a "fast-track" procedure for the TPP. A fast-track procedure would hand over essentially all of the authority for the position of the United States in negotiating a final agreement with the 11 other countries involved to the office of President and the President's personal emissaries, with only a pre-planned rubber stamp left for Congress to do if and whenever a President were to reach an agreement with the other 11 countries. That is a bad idea for a number of reasons. Hopefully you can find an objection to that fast-tracking the TPP idea big enough to get you off of your butt, if you're not off your butt already, to convey with as much force as possible to your federal Representative in Congress that along with the rapidly growing numbers of people who have heard about this you want [your Representative] to know that you strongly disapprove of Representatives of whatever political party thinking of agreeing to this TPP fast-tracking idea. That's what needs to be said, though add more if you want just for the sake of emphasis. Louise Slaughter is one who does NOT need to be told. Among other speakers, Louise Slaughter's representative read a statement today, that sounded good to me. She's strongly against fast-tracking the TPP through Congress.
This Rochester, NY conference was held in a nice conference room in a nice building belonging to the union NYSUT, "A Union of Professionals." The press conference was sponsored jointly by them, the Communications Workers of America, and by another large organization whose purpose is to oppose the fast-tracking of the TPP, and by the Sierra Club. Other major organizations, particularly unions, sent extremely eloquent and well-informed speakers.
I am attaching the handouts from the conference today as a pdf file. I am pleased to report that I did have a brief opportunity to speak, and did speak, on behalf of the Sierra Club. I am not a member of the Sierra Club, but two very active Sierra Club members joined forces in asking me to go speak for the Sierra Club and I did so. I believe that I was able to add some eloquence on behalf of those concerned with the quality of people's drinking water, along with emphatically affirming what the members of the official speaking roster had said. I said, the Sierra Clubs concerns are something very personal with me: Our drinking water right here where I live is bad, due to the fault of some people who didn't know any better not so long ago. Now we know better and WE'RE STILL DOING IT. With this TPP things can only get worse what with jurisdiction over environmental concerns such as drinking water concerns as well as labor concerns being taken over by some world business court probably located somewhere else. STOP IT! I have a very big deep voice, in case you have not had the opportunity to hear it. Just sayin'. :-) Later I stood up again to mention the FCNL.org TOOLS link for communicating with legislators. [They will even invite you to type a letter or fax and they will send it for you, printing and pay the postage as may be called for so that you do not have to. You can also find their direct phone numbers to save having to go through the main Congressional switchboard.] I got good applause, and my younger adult relative appeared pleased to have been seen with me. He wore a nice suit and held a sign about opposing the TPP. He had in fact gone there prepared to speak--he and I had talked about it--but I think ended up feeling that there was not much left to be added to the significant amount that did get said. We arrived back, said "Mission accomplished," and that was it.
But in fact we're not quite there yet. Please start or please escalate your efforts to TELL CONGRESS "DO NOT AGREE TO FAST-TRACKING THE TRANS-PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP PROPOSAL" and to get help from others in doing the same thing.
I think the attached materials are very good as a starter on the multitude of reasons for opposing the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement proposal and for opposing fast-tracking it right now. You are expressly requested by the creators of these materials to reprint them and distribute them as widely as possible.
