Please think of the brilliant British journalist George Monbiot.  To remind you, the first few links below lead to other pieces by him that I have selected to send to you in the past, because of the information they contain.  No I do not have all of this on my mind all of the time.  But I think that I do need for some intelligent and educated people to have it all in mind somewhere.  Why not us?  Yes there may be things we can do.  For one thing, no I believe that we should not follow along with the pundits who are saying, "Give Trump a chance."  His not planning for an immediate World War III is the only positive thing that I have seen.  I cannot just dwell on that one thing--not when there are clean water, clean air, good soil, and non-GMO foods to be concerned with in the shorter term besides unstoppable planetary heating over a longer term.

"These denialogues don't care if their own children end up with syphilis: US conservatives can add teenage pregnancies and STDs to climate change and all the other things they love to disavow," by George Monbiot, The Guardian, July 27, 2009.  December 15, 2016 note: At the end of the very first paragraph this one contains the line, "Without denial there is no hope."  Do not allow that to mislead you into thinking that there would be no benefit at all to working for clean alternative energy sources, and no I do not include "clean" coal in that statement.  It appears from all the recent reports that nothing is going to start the earth onto a cooling trend in any future that humans will ever see.  But it is possible that we can extend the time before the earth becomes uninhabitable for humans.  Younger people now alive might possibly have at least somewhat civilized lives even though food supplies are likely to become increasingly difficult.

"This crisis demands a reappraisal of who we are and what progress means," by George Monbiot, The Guardian, December 3, 2007, referenced by Juan Santos in the article in the message I've forwarded below because the original page link no longer works.

From: Larry Scott

I've lived in upstate New York, which by the way is much more rural than city, for most of my life.  But sixty-five years ago my dad and mother worked for the Southern Baptist Convention as missionaries to the Hopi Indians.  They were both educated people, and my dad was an ordained minister.  I don't remember it, but we lived in Arizona on Second Mesa.  From what I heard growing up, they learned a lot from the Hopi Indians. :-7

From the article I've republished below: "Under capitalism, the state has a primary function: it is not to protect Life; it is to create a controllable populace so that there is a stable zone of production for capital, and to create stable markets for the distribution (including exports) of commodities, and the seizure of resources. In other words, to suppress the people at home, and to intimidate or conquer people abroad."

If you remember having already seen the next paragraph recently, then you won't miss anything by skipping (scrolling) on down to the article below, "The True Sister and the True Brother: Love in the Age of Collapse," by Juan Santos

Back when I was a fairly young child--I don't remember exactly when--I had a recurring nightmare.  Our family had some clear glass one gallon (rather big) jars with screw tops.  We used them to store milk from the goats we had.  In the nightmare, some kind of bugs--they looked like ants--had somehow gotten into the closed bottle of milk and had started to reproduce--a lot.  Over time, the white color went out of the milk as the ants ate and added poisons from their wastes.  Of course the ants all died, eventually, leaving an extremely ugly mess.  Then I would realize that the jar with the ants was the earth with people, in microcosm.  I had that nightmare at least three or four times, and I've never forgotten it.  It made me sad, not angry.  I've told a few people about it over the years, but this may be the first time I've written it down.

Humanity is just not going to go peacefully, I don't believe, even if there are many peaceful individuals.  I think we should all think about that and deal with it somehow--at least those of us who can stand it.  Writers such as Sharon Astyk have made suggestions on how to deal with it.  I'm open to further suggestions.  But I think being angry would just get in the way.  Speaking of Sharon Astyk, here are the links from my June 11th email, "The Theory of Anyway."  She is a small farmer, as well as being a writer.

THE TRUE SISTER AND THE TRUE BROTHER: LOVE IN THE AGE OF COLLAPSE, By Juan Santos
Friday, 22 August 2008

ORIGINAL BLOGPOST
  http://carolynbaker.net
“…Only those who are obedient to the guidance of the Great Creator's laws will survive. If it is the will of the Creator, if the earth is totally destroyed by the willfulness of man, the true sister and brother will give a rebirth to recycle the earth and renew its life.”-from the newsletter of the traditional Hopi Elders, Techqua Ikachi, # 16
Part 1: Gridlock
It is simply beyond me. The earth itself is dying, and most of us will die with it. Tonight in a restaurant, I sat alone with tears in my eyes, watching the people run through the routines of personality and “meaning,” a “meaning” adapted to a way of life that is already over, whose prognosis is terminal; I am all but certain I was the only person there who knew it.
It is not a hard job to keep them in ignorance. They are entranced by what the Hopi call Koyaanisqatsi, all of the things that glitter with death, that bind us in a spell of comfort and numbness to the radical reality of a life out of balance. That the masters of war and global death keep them all in ignorance of what is coming is made simple by their entrancement. It is a simple matter of keeping the spellbound asleep, of making sure no disturbance awakens them.
One wonders if such ignorance is a blessing or a curse. Was it better that the Jews in the death camps did not know that they were entering a gas chamber, that the entranced among them thought they were to get clean, rather than that they were about to be “cleansed” from the face of the Earth? I couldn’t say, because I know we are not heading for a shower, and I cannot find the right words to break the spell. Even if I knew them, I would have no means to speak them soon enough to enough people. I couldn’t really help them prepare, and the leap from this dull ignorance and the hypnosis of death, into a living rebellion and a thrust toward life is simply too large for them to make in the time we have left. We have no time left. With the Nazis at the gas chambers it was Zyklon B: for us it’s Carbon Dioxide and Methane. Although they are odorless –we cannot smell them- they’re already filling the room, and the first of us are already dying.

No, you won’t read it in the paper, certainly not spelled out just this way. They will tell you certain gases may cause death or “endanger millions,” as they put it now. They will never say that it is a system of profit, a way of life, and not the gases, as such, that are killing us. They will only tell us, in the words of the US president, G.W. Bush, that their way of life is “not negotiable.” What this means is that nothing will stop them, that to keep what they have – even for awhile, they will let the rest of us die. They will never say, “Yes, we could stop it, but we won’t.” Instead, the sergeants among them will point their fingers, talking about Zyklon B “alarmists” while the President simply remains unconvinced that Zyklon B really kills. He will claim that there is doubt, scientific doubt, about where Zyklon B really comes from, and whether or not it is anthropogenic – made by humans. Conservatives will say that Zyklon B is essential for the economy, or that the nation must break its dependence on foreign sources of Zyklon B. The debate will rage on the back pages of the newspaper, the pages no one reads. And the ones who want to wake up, the ones who want us to live, will pray that god sends a message, but no one reads that paper, either. Their eyes are glued to “American Idol” and “America’s Most Wanted.” Others will write essays like this one that will be read by 6 thousand of the Earth’s 6 thousand million people. A few of us will understand what we’re facing, a few of us will understand in depth. Very, very few. One in a million, maybe 10 in a million. Even as more begin to stir, it is certain that they will lack the power to make a difference. The guards have guns, while the inmates have only their striped uniforms and television sets, their inertia, their poverty and 6th grade reading level.
Not unlike Carolyn Baker, I am told by people whose focus is on the spiritual that I am too “negative,” too angry, that only love can save the world now, that I should give up my anger and distrust of the Good Germans with their Zyklon B, that I must forgive them, that I have “no Harmony” in my soul, that publishing “missive after missive” of bad news only “brings down” those who need their full attention to be placed on creating the spiritual conditions for the coming Shift to a world of peace and harmony. The advocates of the Love Solution have met me with contempt and anger and , as Baker points out, self -“righteousness.
”But the truth is that I have listened to them with deep carefulness. Because one thing is clear. What we have been doing doesn’t work. Another thing is clear to me, as well: that what we have called our “selves” is a temporary construct, a construct adapted to an artificial environment that is about to, unimaginably and unambiguously, disappear. But oddly, as radical as I have been these last thirty years – and I have been as radical as I could manage, and even much more radical than I could manage, I find myself stuck in the middle now, with no clear solution to this dilemma about love.
But, I know this. That the worst thing oppression has done to me is to eat me alive, to render null the meaning and potential of what I was born to be, to consume my time and my emotional and intellectual and creative and spiritual energies, to block me in from all sides, to make me constantly have to react to the barrage of abuse, poverty, physical and emotional suffering, exploitation, indignity, subterfuge, manipulations and constrictions that make oppression what it is, and which make the world go ‘round. I’ve known since I was 16 that this is not a way of life, but a way of death. The knowledge was more than I could absorb, then, but over the decades I have absorbed it, learned to understand it, name it, pin it, identify its games, their rules and their permutations.
But, looking around, all of that has not helped me to escape it, even though the truth of my own private mythology is that the task that was set for me was to understand it so that when the Time came, as it has come, I could help to create a new culture, one free of oppression, one that would not be a living death. Nevertheless, I still have to reckon with the reality that my understanding has not set me free. I know how not to live, I know what not to repeat. But, I don’t know how to live. I know only a little of that.
I assume that my situation is simply part of a larger one, a situation one self-appointed New Age guru has rightly described as an all but all encompassing Karmic Gridlock.
If today is the culmination of everything that has gone before it, if the current global crisis is the singular product of “history,” of civilization, then all of the contradictions of that history, in all of their permutations, economic, cultural, social, physical, mental and emotional, are coming to a head as part of this culmination, this crisis. The totalism of the system, of this way of death, has reached a new threshold we can call Gridlock and Collapse. The cat has caught its tail, the Matrix has trapped itself. It has destroyed its own options and has nothing left to feed on but itself, as if it were a cancer with nothing left to feed on but more cancer, with no healthy flesh left to invade.
Part 2: The Good News
The good news is that the death system is dying. It could come to no other end.
The bad news is that it has become so all encompassing that there is nowhere left to run if we were able to escape it. Escaping global warming would be like escaping the air itself, the atmosphere itself. But we cannot escape the air, there are no spaceships to carry us elsewhere, and we probably couldn’t breathe if we got there.
I don’t think dying is so bad, personally. I came close to dying a few months ago. Later, it occurred to me it would have been easier than living. If it were to happen, I later realized, all it would take is to close the eyes. Easy, but cheap and faithless.
What we have been doing – dying – doesn’t work. What we have been doing – fighting or resisting, or going along or “getting ours” – doesn’t work. It didn’t work.
And its time is over.
This whole way of life is over. Everything my generation rebelled against is over This cancerous consumption and the growth of consumption is over. It can’t take another step. As George Monbiot points out, if the economy grows by only 3% a year, global economic activity- and consumption- will double in roughly a quarter of a century.
Monbiot writes, “In other words, if our economy grows at 3% between now and 2040, we will consume in that period economic resources equivalent to all those we have consumed since humans first stood on two legs. Then, between 2040 and 2063, we must double our total consumption again. Reading that paper I realised for the first time what we are up against.
”There are no easy fixes. Short of a very severe global economic collapse there may be no fixes at all. An article in the Los Angeles Times shows why. The Times reports that overall there has been a 12% decrease in global warming emissions since the forging of the Kyoto Protocol. But, the Times reports, “It [the apparent success of Kyoto] was an illusion. The progress wasn't due to a global embrace of green power, but rather to the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, which shut down smoke-belching factories across the region.
"Here’s the result of the Eastern Bloc collapse:“Russia: Down 29% in carbon dioxide emissions since 1990.

Romania: A 43% reduction.

Latvia: A resounding 60% drop.
”Far from reducing emissions- an utterly urgent necessity – the Times says that “total carbon dioxide emissions from countries bound by Kyoto's caps have risen by more than 8%.” Among developing nations, China's emissions grew 138% since Kyoto was adopted. The U.S., the number one polluter, never even signed the accord.
There is no reason to assume that a market based plan that comes out of Bali will do any better at all.
When absolute survival depends on a certain set of actions, it is pure death and foolishness to set up a system with competing survival drives, one with built-in conflicts that undermine what must be done. But any market based plan does just that. In the real world, survival depends on cutting greenhouse gas emissions. But in the artificial world of the market, for the capitalist, “survival” depends on growth, on cutting costs, on making as much as possible for as little as possible – on making profit and on making more profit than your competitors in an ever-expanding cycle. Any market based system of “credits” to pollute – credits to kill, licenses to kill - pits the short term survival of a few capitalists against the survival of Life on Earth.
It’s not just greenhouse gases that must be cut. Industrial production itself – which produces greenhouse gases and a million other plagues - must not grow, certainly not at a rate that will cause us to produce and consume – and thus pollute - as much in the next quarter century as we have consumed in the entire existence of the human species.
Well, there is an alternative, but it is one that no government on Earth will ever embrace. The only thing that can stop the increase in production, and thus the destruction of all Life, is a Global Depression, which, by definition, drastically reverses economic growth. Maybe then we can meet the standards science says must be met – an 80% reduction in greenhouse gases - or more– a rate of reduction over twice the size of the reduction created by the Russian collapse.
Since any Kyoto-style accord can be nothing more than a deadly mix of food and poison, we may thank god that such a Depression, and with it, real reductions in greenhouse gases, seems increasingly likely, even inevitable. Take your choice: Relative poverty, even the deepest poverty, in the short term, or Global Death. But let’s be more specific in laying out the meaning of the choice. Consider this: James Lovelock of “Gaia” fame has projected that unchecked global warming will lead to conditions, where, by 2100, there will remain only 500 million humans on Earth, and they will live at or near the poles. Lovelock contends that the rest of the planet will be uninhabitable. Consider. By 2050 Global warming will have destroyed one million species of Life on Earth. Human global population is due to reach 9 billion in the same year. If only 500 million humans survive in 2100, that means that roughly 8 and ½ billion – about 95% of all humans living at mid-century - will die. It comes down to it: Either this way of death- in-life dies, or the human species will be eradicated or all-but eradicated, along with the vast majority of Life on the planet. Let’s revisit our premises. The market requires growth if individual formations of capital (banks, corporations, companies, businesses) are to survive; while Life requires no growth, or negative economic growth, if we are to survive. It’s that plain, that simple. In all likelihood, what comes out of the UN conference in Bali, which is meant to lay the groundwork for a “New Kyoto,” will be nothing but a compromise with global death, one in which death has the upper hand. Economic collapse is the one thing that might give Life itself a way to continue.
Of course, under capitalism, the state has a primary function: it is not to protect Life; it is to create a controllable populace so that there is a stable zone of production for capital, and to create stable markets for the distribution (including exports) of commodities, and the seizure of resources. In other words, to suppress the people at home, and to intimidate or conquer people abroad. Needless to say, economic collapse leads to war, as competing states seek to use warfare to maximize their control of markets and overseas resources and emerge from the collapse “on top,” The next depression will be no different, unless the capitalists realize that reconstituting their system is a hopeless task. Which, given the impending realities of peak oil, just might be the blessed case. Economic collapse, war, peak oil, and a vastly over-extended US empire are all intimately linked and mutually reinforcing realities that lead in one direction - to the death of the Empire and the impossibility of its resurrection. Let us pray and let us work to make sure its death comes in time for us all to survive it. Let us pray and work as if we were in line for the gas chamber. Because we are.
Part 3: Renewing the World
Let us pray and let us work and let us learn how to build a completely different future once this way is finally dead and buried. It will take everything we have, and more. It will take what we don’t have.
Since this way of life is over, since this culture is over, the fiction of who we have assumed ourselves to be is also over. We are not that. We never were that. It’s just that our survival in the system meant we had no choice but to pretend- even to ourselves – to be that. It is time, now, for us to deliberately and consciously to enter into what my generation called the psychedelic experience, the dissolution of our egos- I mean our stories, the stories we have told ourselves about what it is to be alive, to be a human being on Earth. Like an actor when the stage is being torn down after the show, it’s time to abandon who we were, what we were, what we said, what we did, and what we planned. That’s what it means to die consciously, to allow the ego to die, to let go of a life that can no longer be sustained. That’s what it means to die with joy, to see death as liberation from suffering. All the stuff the Buddha said. It’s Time now. It’s time to die, so that the world might be re-born. I imagine, rightly or wrongly – I haven’t asked - that the people who’ve been preaching love and forgiveness to me already understood this. I don’t know, and it matters little. I let them work in me, I let their words dismantle me, even though I had felt profoundly insulted by them, even though some of the things that were said were arrogant and clearly meant to be insulting. Nevertheless, I began to give up the story. Slowly, the anger is giving way to sadness. Sadness is a step closer to love than anger. That’s good. Beneath the anger is grief, and beneath the grief is light and joy and renewal and the colors of the rainbow. Beneath the grief is life, not the phony “life” we’ve been led to lead, but real life. I know, because I’ve been down the road before. That’s how I knew to listen to the love preachers in the first place. That’s how I knew it was time to shut up, to sit with the impossible and let it answer itself. And here’s the deal.

Death’s own answer is love. No, it’s not death vs. love. Love is death’s own answer. The answer we have always needed under the death system is love - a way to love and a way to be loved. A way to connect, to break down, to open up. Oppression is nothing but a block to love, to connection, to inclusion. Love is the road. Oppression is not sustainable, and to that extent, it is not fundamentally real. It is doomed to collapse. Love is fundamentally real. Connection is fundamentally real. Death and oppression have no victory if we know we are connected, if we know that the door is open to our love, if we can still give it and receive it, if we can pledge it beyond the grave, beyond the prison’s bars. It is our love for life, for kids and animals, that we can pledge now, and pledge it beyond the grave, to a future we will never live to see. To a new world whose parents and ancestors we may become if we but choose it and lay the foundations for it. We will have to lay them the only place they can be laid, in the midst of the destruction and unimaginable anguish to come.

It is love that we, ourselves, will need, as the world we have been shunted into dies around us. What we will need is those who will love us enough to help us face death, the death of our ego-“lives” and the real death that will accompany economic collapse or ecological collapse, or both. We will need people willing to become boddhisatvas, people willing to try to become something like we imagine Christ or Quetzalcoatl to have been, people willing to be with us, in love, until the end, and beyond the end. It’s Time now. It’s time to get free. It’s time to become the True Sister and the True Brother, those who know they are related, those who know they are connected, those who can remember how to love, those who the Hopi said might renew the Earth.
Note: “Love” is the palpable assurance or insurance of connection and inclusion. It is the certainty of one's own connection and the guarantor of connection for the beloved. It is a verb, not a feeling, per se, and not only a spiritual state of being. It is an act of will; a commitment and a discipline and a capacity for understanding, admiration, compassion, risk and expression, more than it is a feeling or a state of being, although it is also these, as well. The palpable assurance or insurance of connection and inclusion is made manifest in acts that express admiration and compassion , and through work, risk or sacrifice aimed at extending one’s self and one’s boundaries to include the other, their well being, survival and spiritual growth. It is inseparable from and identical with acts of caring.
We are, as the Hopi Elders and other indigenous elders tell us, the Caretakers of Land and Life. Our role is to love the Earth – not to destroy Her. This is who and what we are, our identity and purpose outside the Matrix of Death.
In Nahuatl, the word for “humanity” itself is “Macehua”; the caretakers who are obligated to preserve land and life.

Some of us grew up counting on the fiduciary account, the Social Security Retirement account that we paid into during the years that we were working.  That was a contract.  Congress has cheated us over the years by falsifying and understating the annual cost of living increases to the point where it is now quite difficult to live on what was originally planned to be an ok retirement plan for working people.  They do that by ignoring the increases in the cost of food.  I myself have managed so far--I do not owe anybody anything, but it would be totally impossible without the medical insurance plugins that have been added over the years.  Things are not getting better.  Young people do not expect to make and are not making more than did their parents.  The Social Security System is one government agency that works--except for the Congress reducing benefits so as not to pay back any of the money that it has borrowed into the general tax fund.  It never has paid back any of that borrowed money, and it does not want to start paying it back.  It has other plans, like continually increasing the crazy "defense" (war equipment) budget.
Please support at least the maintenance of the Social Security Retirement and the health insurance funds.  Almost nobody has the kind of money that doctors, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies get.
Thank you.

Yes I know that I did already send you the first Yes! magazine article listed below as a "bonus article" in the "ACTION PLEASE.." message that I sent you December 3rd.  This message is for the other three in the list below plus the first one if you missed it the first time, in no particular order.  In its entirety, my last public comment to one Arlene Duke at Quora.com:
"In fact I do appreciate your having brought up air and water and soil problems, Arlene Duke, even though they were not included in the question. The fact that we can be productive in working to avoid and ameliorate some of those problems bears frequent mention. I actually did a tiny bit to help the water protectors at Standing Rock in North Dakota, and I am pleased at the decision of the Army Corps of Engineers to stop that particular project for the moment at least.

You can read what is there without signing in.  If you feel a strong desire to respond, just sign into Quora.  There has developed a strong army of Zionists spreading false propaganda at Quora
that I do not appreciate, but otherwise it's a great place.  Note once again that "Zionist" is not a synonym for "Jewish" despite the existence of some amount of overlap.

Just as a by the way, I feel no impulse whatsoever to suggest an imperialist takeover on whichever country this young woman lives in.  It might be Saudi Arabia.   I remember that the lie that was used by the U.S. government to convince our soldiers that there was a good purpose to our attacking Afghanistan was that we were there to free the females, when in fact we were there to get a big oil pipeline built.  Sheesh!  My recollection is that oil transmission was finally rerouted to go around Afghanistan and that few women's lives have improved except perhaps those of the female members of families involved in and related to the armaments industries.

sent 12/3/16 ACTION PLEASE, because this matters: two calls and more from YES! Magazine: "The Many Ways to Help Standing Rock"

On Monday December 5, 2016, the U.S. military is scheduled to stage an attack upon the Sioux tribe at Standing Rock in North Dakota.  The excuse given is that these subhuman (American Indian) adults need to be protected from the cold what with their being too stupid to stay indoors.

I suppose they could use some protection against the private unlicensed militias that have been spraying them with water in the cold.  The Sioux landowners' stand is nonviolent.  However, that kind of protection does not seem to be the plan of the official U.S. military, although 2,000 or so U.S. military veterans have gone, or are going, to stand with the Indians on the side of justice from December 4th to December 7th.

1. From the familiar Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) I have received a request to make calls to the Department of Justice--(202) 353-1555 and to President Barack Obama: (202) 456-1111.  The suggested script is:
My name is [full name] from [city, town, or village and state].

I oppose the Dakota Access Pipeline and plans to evict water protectors and their supporters at Standing Rock.

At a minimum, the government should:
  • Send observers to prevent the militarized, aggressive policing that has already injured hundreds of people;
  • Investigate civil rights violations; and
  •  Negotiate with Governor Dalrymple and tribal leaders to reduce tensions.
-----------------------------------------------
2. I also received a very serious message from YES! Magazine, which is major and familiar.  The editors of and contributors to that publication have been engaged for many years in working hard on many fronts toward reducing damage to our environment.

The message I received featured the content of this article: "The Many Ways to Help Standing Rock: Even if you can’t show up at the wintry encampments, you can join water protectors in other ways: from calling the North Dakota governor to breaking up with your bank," by Sarah van Gelder, YES! Magazine, Nov 29, 2016

There is something you can do every day.  There are many phone numbers and addresses with names of people to call, more than just the two I gave.

Please.  It is time for action.  Because this particular evil, treating these indigenous people in particular as subhuman and worthless, is probably not something you want to see repeated from out of American history past.

BONUS ARTICLE: "8 Strategies for Confronting Hate (That Don’t Involve a Safety Pin)
Everyday heroism like standing up for someone in trouble means pushing past your own fear. Here’s how to do so with caution and courage,"
by Elizabeth Svoboda, YES! Magazine, Dec 02, 2016.  I might send this again, by itself.  In the meantime, please read it.  There are challenges, such as "Be the first person to speak up."

Larry
P.S. Please make some calls on this.  Because it matters.  Under the "1." near the top there is a possibly useful script that you could use to make it easier.

"Trump’s Trouble with the Truth," by Paul R. Pillar, Consortium News, December 1, 2016.  You may remember Paul R. Pillar.  "Paul R. Pillar, in his 28 years at the Central Intelligence Agency, rose to be one of the agency’s top analysts. He is author most recently of Why America Misunderstands the World (2016)."  I have not read that book, but I have getting it at least to look at on my to-do list. :-7

The article linked above that starts off with one of Donald Trump's latest big lies--that he'd have won the popular vote but for the "fact" that "millions of people voted illegally"--(nope!)--fits in with the news that I sent yesterday. (See the forward below for your easy reference.)  You might also recall that fact checkers found that approximately 65 percent of all of Donald Trump's fact allegations during his campaign were false, many to the level of "liar liar pants on fire."  Yes, yes, 29 percent of Hillary Clinton's statements were false at some level also, but she is not the one we have to deal with now.
I have no particular reason to think that John Podesta's emails were hacked by Russians.  But whoever did it, there are going to be those who proclaim that we would be better off not knowing about what was in them, the proof of a lot of lying/misleading public statements by Hillary Clinton and her campaign.  Me I disagree.  For me the main question was whether or not they are real, and from everything I have heard, they are real.  Of course I oppose privacy invasion.  But if there are going to be any exceptions, that was a good one, warrant or no warrant!

This one here is about a guy who's been making his living publishing "news" stories that he's made up out of whole cloth.  At least once Donald Trump picked up and repeated as fact something totally false that this guy had created--not that Donald Trump needed or needs any help with making things up.

Please see also, from one of my computer geek feeds, "Just how partisan is Facebook's fake news? We tested it: Far more spin and fake news is pushed at Trump supporters," by  Mark Hachman, techconnect, November 21, 2016

You know that I have not yet started with Facebook.  Good for me, right?  :-))

Please listen to Dr. Cornell West, Professor Emeritus, Princeton, tell the straight scoop on what is going on with Wall Street and Donald Trump.  Because it matters.  Dr. West was the December 1, 2016 guest on Democracy Now.  I hope you remember him from his appearance at Collection at Swarthmore College in February 2014.  I watched the first few seconds and then decided to download the whole hour so as to be able to see it smoothly.  Here for your convenience is that download link.  The mp4 video standard file should start downloading.  The first 15 minutes is the daily headlines.  They are most interesting, trust me.  The rest is with Dr. West: https://publish.dvlabs.com/democracynow/360/dn2016-1201.mp4

Here below are a couple of segments, separated out by Democracy Now.  Note the link at the bottom about Dr. West's disagreement with the hope of Senator Sanders that the Democratic Party can be rebuilt.  Cornell West is not giving up.  He plans a different approach doing his very best to saving our country.

"Cornel West on Donald Trump: This is What Neo-Fascism Looks Like"

He starts with the words, "I just thank God for Democracy Now! because journalism is almost dead as we move into this neofascist age. And thank god you all are still willing to tell the truth."

President-elect Donald Trump has announced a handful of new cabinet picks with deep ties to Wall Street. On Tuesday, he named Steven Mnuchin to be Treasury Secretary. Mnuchin is a former executive for Goldman Sachs, where his father also worked. Mnuchin’s hedge fund also played a role in the housing crisis, after it scooped up the failing California bank IndyMac in 2008. Under Mnuchin’s ownership, IndyMac foreclosed on 36,000 families, particularly elderly residents trapped in reverse mortgages. Mnuchin was accused of running a "foreclosure machine." Trump has also picked billionaire private-equity investor Wilbur Ross to be Commerce Secretary. Ross specializes in flipping bankrupt companies for profit, often buying the U.S. companies at low prices and then selling them to overseas investors. He and his companies have sometimes engaged in the very practices Donald Trump rails against: shipping jobs and factories overseas. For more on these picks, we speak with Cornel West, Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. During the Democratic primary he endorsed Bernie Sanders. After Hillary Clinton won the nomination West made headlines when he endorsed Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein.

TRANSCRIPT
This is a rush transcript. Copy may not be in its final form.

NERMEEN SHAIKH: "Wall Street Wins Again as Trump Chooses Bankers and Billionaires." That was the headline in piece by Bloomberg, on Wednesday, shortly after Donald Trump tapped former Goldman Sachs executive Steven Mnuchin to be his Treasury secretary and billionaire investor Wilbur Ross to head the Commerce Department. This comes as Politico is reporting Trump is also considering Goldman Sachs president Gary Cohn for a top post. The two met at Trump Tower on Tuesday. Trump’s chief strategist Steve Bannon is also a former Goldman Sachs Vice President who went on to head the right-wing Breitbart news site.

AMY GOODMAN: Wall Street has celebrated the news. On Wednesday, Goldman Sachs stock jumped 3.6% to an eight-year high. This all comes after Donald Trump campaigned on an anti-establishment message often publicly criticizing his opponents for their ties to Goldman Sachs. Here’s Trump speaking about Ted Cruz 10 months ago.
DONALD TRUMP: What he wanted to do is say, I will protect you from Goldman Sachs. I will protect you from Citibank. And I will protect you from the banks, because I’m Robin Hood and I’m this wonderful senator and I’m going to protect you from these banks, and then he’s borrowing from the banks. And by the way, he’s got personal guarantees. And he got-low interest loans. He got low-interest loans. They’re low interest. And now he’s going to go after Goldman Sachs? It doesn’t work that way. Goldman Sachs owns him. Remember that, folks. They own him.
NERMEEN SHAIKH: On Wednesday, Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, the ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, criticized Donald Trump for picking former Goldman Sachs executive Steven Mnuchin to be Treasury secretary. Brown said, "President-elect Trump campaigned against big money’s power in Washington and accused Wall Street and hedge funds of getting away with murder. But now he’s picked a hedge-fund manager whose Wall Street ties couldn’t run deeper to lead the Treasury Department, which is exactly what this election showed the American people don’t want. This isn’t draining the swamp, it’s stocking it with alligators." The words of Senator Sherrod Brown.

AMY GOODMAN: Well, to talk more about the election of Donald Trump, his cabinet picks, and much more, we’re joined by Cornel West, Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. During the Democratic primary, he endorsed Bernie Sanders. After Hillary Clinton won the nomination, West made headlines when he endorsed Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein. Welcome back to Democracy Now! It’s great to have you with us.

CORNEL WEST: I just thank God for Democracy Now! because journalism is almost dead as we move into this neofascist age. And thank god you all are still willing to tell the truth.

AMY GOODMAN: Well, your response to the election of Donald Trump and now the cabinet he is appointing around him?

CORNEL WEST: Well, I think he’s already betrayed working people in terms of making sure, in his view, that Wall Street is in the driver’s seat. And what I mean by that is that in an emerging neofascist moment, you have the rule of big business, which is big banks and big corporations. You scapegoat the most vulnerable. It could be Muslims, Mexicans, gay brothers, lesbian sisters, indigenous peoples, black peoples, jews, and so on. And then you also have militaristic orientations around the world. And so, you see the extension of the repressive apparatus, as those of us who hit the streets, those of us who will be — are willing to go to jail, we’ve had to recognize we’ll have more coming at us under Trump administration. But, the crucial thing is, is that he had talked about his connection with working people. And it’s clear that the one percent are still running things.

NERMEEN SHAIKH: But, you’ve also said, Dr. West, you just said that his administration will be neofascist. Could you explain? What do you mean by that, neofascist as opposed to fascist, and what the two mean?

CORNEL WEST: What neofascist — it’s an American style form of fascism. What I mean by that is we’ve had neoliberal rule from Carter to Obama. That neoliberal rule left in place a national security state. It left in place massive surveillance. It left in place the ability of the president to kill an American citizen with no due process. That’s Obama. That was the culmination of the neoliberal era. Now you get someone who is narcissistic — which is to say out of control psychologically — who is ideologically confused — which is to say, in over his head — and who does he choose? The most right wing reactionary zealots which lead toward the arbitrary deployment of law, which is what neofascism is, but to reinforce corporate interests, big bank interest, and to keep track of those of us who are cast as peoples of color, women, jews, Arabs, Muslims, Mexicans, and so forth, and so — So, this is one of the most frightening moments in the history of this very fragile empire and fragile republic.

AMY GOODMAN: So, I want to talk about some of the picks of Donald Trump, like President-elect Donald Trump’s treasury secretary, Steven Mnuchin, deep ties to Wall Street including working as a partner for Goldman Sachs, where his father also worked. Mnuchin’s hedge fund also played a role in the housing crisis after it scooped up the failing California bank IndyMac in 2008. Under Mnuchin’s ownership, IndyMac foreclosed on 36,000 families, particularly elderly residents trapped in reverse mortgages. People would go to Mnuchin’s home to protest outside as they were foreclosed out of their own homes. Mnuchin was accused of running a foreclosure machine. The bank, which was renamed One West, was also accused of racially discriminatory lending practices. In 2015 Mnuchin sold a bank for $3.4 billion, $1.8 billion more than he bought it for.

CORNEL WEST: This is what you call spiritual blackout. There is a level of callousness. There’s a level of indifference toward poor and working people. Preoccupation with greed and most importantly, lack of accountability. Doing anything they can do unless, in the end, they get caught by the law, and of course, oftentimes they have already disproportionately influenced those who apply the laws, those who supposed to be regulating them. And so, this is another instance of Wall Street run amok. I mean, I, and some of us were very critical [indiscernible] and others, very critical of Geithner, Summers, the Ruben crowd straight out of Wall Street when brother Barack Obama moved into the White House.

AMY GOODMAN: Summers, who you knew well because he was president of Harvard when you were there a professor there —

CORNEL WEST: Absolutely.

AMY GOODMAN: — and got in a bit of an altercation with him.

CORNEL WEST: Bless his soul. But — so that you can see on the neoliberal rule, Wall Street’s still in the driver seat. We were hoping, with brother Bernie Sanders, that we could bring the neoliberal era to a close. And by neoliberal, what I mean is, when you see a social problem, you financialize, you privatize, and militarize. You get mass incarceration on the one hand, privatize schools — I know sister Diane Ravitch, on of the great prophetic voices of our time, in this regard will talk about this later — and then you militarize, which is to say drop bombs on seven Muslim countries and then wonder why Muslims are upset. Or you drop bombs on innocent children with U.S. drones and then wonder why the gangsters, the fascists coming out of the Muslim world, are organizing. And of course, we’ve got to be anti-fascist across the board. But this is going to be the most trying of times in our lifetime. There’s no doubt about it. And at 63 years old, I am thoroughly fortified for this fight. I will tell you that.

NERMEEN SHAIKH: Well, given that people who voted for Trump and continuing with what you said, many have questioned how Trump, who after all is a billionaire born into a wealthy family, how did he become a working class hero so widely perceived among the people who voted for him as someone outside of the American economic and political elite class?

CORNEL WEST: Well, a significant number of those who voted for Trump were actually working people, middle-class people, who are looking for a way out given the fact they’re losers under neoliberal globalization. And they tilted toward Bernie Sanders, but the Democratic Party and its neoliberal regime marginalized him and us. And so, the only alternative is this pseudo-populist billionaire with these narcissistic sensibilities and fascist — neofascist proclivities. And he presented himself as caring for their situation. And so, that economic insecurity, that economic neglect is very real. There’s no doubt about that. And it’s disproportionate white brothers and sisters, but they are suffering. And it was a cry of the heart.

Unfortunately, given the right-wing populist and the authoritarian orientation of Trump, he uses that kind of anguish to scapegoat Mexicans, Muslims, and others rather than confront the most powerful — 21 percent of those who voted for Trump do not like him, but they feel as if they had no alternative. And we have to keep in mind 42 percent of our fellow citizens didn’t go to the polls at all. Already given up on the system, you see. And so, the system itself is, now, is in such a chronic crisis. And we said before the election that Trump would be a neofascist catastrophe. And it’s very clear from his picks that he is moving in that direction.

AMY GOODMAN: I want to turn to Bernie Sanders. We had the first extensive hour with Bernie after the election. I spoke to him Monday night at the Free Library. We played it Tuesday. He spoke about how he hopes to reform the Democratic Party as the new chair. Well, it’s a new position called the outreach position. He’s now in the Senate Democratic leadership. Even if he is an independent socialist. This is Bernie Sanders.
SEN. BERNIE SANDERS: The new approach, I think, is to, a, create a fifty state strategy. That means we start playing ball in states that the Democrats have conceded decades ago. But, more importantly, we create a kind of grassroots party where the most important people in the party are not just wealthy campaign contributors, but working people, young people, people in the middle class who are going to come in and going to start telling us what their needs are and give us some ideas as to how we go forward. And I accept this responsibility as outreach chair with a lot of trepidation, but also with excitement. I’m going to be going around the country to try to do everything that I can to create a party which represents working people and not just the one percent.

I mentioned a bit ago that some interesting news articles are at the top at Consortium News.

This is one.  I strongly recommend studying the whole thing hard, because that will, I hope and believe, help you to decide whom to believe in all the confusion about a few things that have been going on lately.

You may have heard something about the recent article in The Washington Post about Russia having hacked into the U.S. elections.  A good friend sent me the link to that piece.  The problem is that the piece was unsubstantiated.  Despite its being unsubstantiated, I have been seeing mention of it over and over in the past few days.  That is a bad thing.  Hopefully this will help, at least as far as you and I are concerned.
"The Fake News About Fake News," by Patrick Henningsen, Consortium News, November 30, 2016.  [I do not recall being familiar with Patrick Henningsen. I rely heavily on the faith I have developed in Robert Parry (Wikipedia link) over the past few years.  Robert Parry is the editor of Consortium News.  He has a serious reputation to uphold as an independent journalist.)

I can add that, according to Mr. Henningsen, a number of news sources that I have come to regard as excellent over the past 10 years or so are among the damned in that Washington Post article.  They include, among others whose names you may recognize when you get to them, TruthOut and TruthDig, which you too may know are the life works of very honest American patriots in the truest sense, people who love their country and hate to see it being ruined, even by powerful Americans like Richard Cheney, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton.  I leave out Donald Trump only because he has not been in charge of any of it. Yet.  His appointments certainly do not bode well for anybody we know.  There seem to be many who are not about to roll over and play dead with him.  Thank you Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.  No fakers there either, for sure.
