That is because mp3 files work more universally for audio only, and I converted the mp4 audio and video for you for that reason, because the mp3 format works almost instantly for you at ge.tt. The audio quality in the mp4 file is 192 kbps, so my conversion to an mp3 cannot possibly be better than that even though mine says 320 kbps. That means the one I made is of high enough quality to be almost but not quite as good as whatever was the source. Anyway, please enjoy it either way or both ways, one at a time. "What I Discovered From Interviewing Imprisoned ISIS Fighters," by Lydia Wilson speaking from The Nation October 21, 2015 (link). [NB: I have decided to keep the title even though this one was written a bit before this past Friday the 13th. I did first discover it since that Friday, if that counts. Actually the October 21st article just suddenly became even more interesting than it was originally, I think.
"The Price Of Civilization," by Jim Wright, speaking from Stonekettle, November 14 (early this Saturday morning just past), 2015 (link).
These two great pieces say the same thing, that the fighters from ISIL are mostly not crazy with Wahabism. The Wahabism comes from the extremely wealthy Saudi Arabian kings who have contributed huge amounts of money and perhaps a bit of leadership to ISIL, especially at the beginning. The Saudi kings themselves are now much more concerned with their enterprise off in Yemen, killing off the members of a local independent tribe that does not agree with them and paying not so much attention to Iraq and Syria and Israel and Iran and the U.S. involvement in those very connected places at the moment. P.S. Just by the way, the Saudi kings are lying totally about that Yemen tribe having anything to do with Iran.
Anyway, the ISIL fighters around Iraq and Syria--none in Israel--are doing what they are doing because as private individuals they themselves felt that they simply had nothing better to do with their time than join ISIL and try to restore some of what they and their families had in Iraq before the U.S. attack on Iraq with Saddam Hussein as an excuse.
Yes, it certainly was convenient that Saddam Hussein had indeed committed a few atrocities--few speaking relatively compared to the massive number of atrocities that we of the United States have committed there so far and continuing on--with Saddam Hussein long since dead now and no longer subject to our punishment. (I'm "just sayin'." :-| )
Many of the ISIL fighters blame the U.S. and the new Iraqi President that the U.S. put into place, Nouri al-Maliki. Nouri al-Maliki was a type of Shiite Muslim born and raised, as are many Iraqis and Iranians among others of various Shiite types, maybe as many types as there are types of Christians, more or less. So anyway, from his actual behavior, no matter what else he may have said, Nouri al-Maliki did hate the types of Muslims under the other major umbrella, the Sunni Muslims.
So the ISIL fighters that are from Iraq, which includes many or most of the ISIL fighters and many of those who are from Iraq being ones who were born into one or another of the various types of Sunni tribes, not just the crazy Wahabis, of which there were and are great numbers in Saudi Arabia but which were relatively few in Iraq until more recent times. All types of Sunnis in Iraq in the Nouri al-Maliki era grew up in a world of oppression, of having nothing to do, of not being able to find employment, of being in danger all the time (from supporters of Nouri al-Maliki). So they literally had nothing at all to do that had even a chance of making things better but fighting with ISIL, and never mind the theological arguments.
I leave it to your personal brilliance to know how to find the history sections in the Iraq Wikipedia page if you would like more detail than I have just given.
By the way, I hope that Jim Wright was mistaken in saying, more or less, "Now we have to have a war." It might just have been a bit premature of him to have said exactly those words within hours of this past Friday in Paris.

In my email just previous asking for help for the good Elizabeth Warren I pointed out that she is a fighter. Here is a (link) that I have given you maybe only twice in the past, for a video that does the job of demonstrating that Elizabeth Warren is a fighter. If you've watched, please consider this a friendly reminder of your experience. :-) If you have not witnessed her then you will get a bit of very interesting education. And she is one of the very very small company of politicians who work very hard at saying nothing that they do not know to be true. She has not gotten caught in any misrepresentation of easily identifiable facts at any rate, in huge contrast with most of the rest of them by far. To me that is of critical importance in being willing to listen to her further.
Oh, and by the way, since she was speaking then of the Trans-Pacific Partnership proposal, please be reminded to keep working against that while there still might be a short time left within which to be effective. She has not gotten caught in any misrepresentation of easily identifiable facts at any rate, in huge contrast with most of the rest of them by far. To me that is of critical importance in being willing to listen to her further.
Oh, and by the way, since she was speaking then of the Trans-Pacific Partnership proposal, please be reminded to keep working against that while there still might be a short time left within which to be effective. I personally do not make much connection between people with more money than I have and with my getting annual contractual raises to my retirement plan with the federal Social Security System. That's just me, perhaps. My big personal concern with Social Security is the U.S. government breaching its contract with me. An example of the government breaching its contract with me as a retiree is its decision not to have a cost of living increase for next year. Given that my cost of living--mainly food--has increased, annual cost of living increases are built into the contract that I bought and paid for.
So even though the goal may be the same, I do not much care for the concept even of discussing some sort of fairness between me and people who have more money, as my still-beloved Elizabeth Warren is doing here. It is a breach of contract. In my opinion that concept is really all that should be necessary. So this framing actually offends me a bit despite my personal interest. But if it works, hey, I'll take my money and apply it to what the government actually does owe me by the terms of our contract. Next year, for just the third time since 1975, seniors who receive Social Security won’t be getting an annual cost of living increase. Neither will millions of other Americans whose veterans’ benefits, disability benefits, and other monthly payments are pegged to Social Security.
Two-thirds of retirees depend on Social Security to pay for the basics, to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads – but seniors who usually get a small boost on January 1st won’t see an extra dime next year. That’s why today, I’m introducing the Seniors and Veterans Emergency (SAVE) Benefits Act – a one-time payment equivalent to a Social Security benefits increase of 3.9%.

Why give seniors and veterans a 3.9% Social Security boost? Well, times are tough for America’s seniors – but they aren't tough for everyone. According to recent data, CEOs at the top 350 American companies received, on average, a 3.9% pay increase last year.
But here’s the kicker: taxpayers like you subsidize huge pay packages for CEOs through billions of dollars in giveaways, including a crazy loophole that allows corporations to write off obscene executive bonuses as a business expense for “performance pay.”
Our new SAVE Benefits Act would give seniors and veterans a benefits boost without adding a single penny to the deficit simply by closing that performance pay loophole. In fact, closing that tax loophole would create enough revenue to give seniors and vets this 3.9% emergency boost and still have money left over for the Social Security Trust Fund to help extend the life of Social Security.
Think about what this change would mean. A one-time 3.9% Social Security payment is worth about $581 a person next year – a little less than $50 a month. For someone barely scraping by on a $1,250 Social Security check each month, $581 would cover almost three months of groceries, or a year’s worth of out-of-pocket costs for a Medicare beneficiary’s prescription drugs. According to an analysis, that little boost could lift more than 1 million Americans out of poverty. That’s a big deal.
This is about choices. We have the money to do this – only right now that money goes to fund a loophole that benefits corporate CEOs. We could use exactly that same money to help out seniors and vets – and make the Social Security system more stable. For me, it’s pretty straightforward: Our spending should reflect our values.
So let’s just do it. Let’s close the loophole and let’s use the money to give seniors and vets the support they need on January 1st. Sign up now to show Congress that America supports the SAVE Benefits Act.

I am very pleased with the result of my request for more good news sites particularly with some emphasis on science.
The first one of three above, Quartz, came from a still-young adult Millennial relative of mine. It seems to me that he is much smarter than I am in some ways that he is blessed with the brain for, more than I am. I am not sure he's the best with live rural animals, though, just to be fair. I know a number of people who are more embedded than he or I with a nature that includes daily contact with live rural animals. I give them credit. Anyway, he gave me the Quartz site, and I found the other two myself from pursuing that one.
Last night and today I have been pondering once again The "Serenity Prayer," by the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr:
The point is, those are some areas that seem to me important and in which denial reaches great statistical heights in the old U.S. of A. That saddens me.
But then we got back to the Serenity Prayer (see above). I find value in just struggling with denial whenever I get a reasonable opening. I have been able to speak my mind on occasion even if the topic is one that some or many people consider inappropriate for polite conversation. No, I am not referring to the use of impolite words per se. And denial of some important shared things is something that I feel might be within my capabilities to effect change, even of only in fairly small ways. But that is me, and my estimation.
The struggle for the "wisdom to know the difference" between what one can change and what one cannot change is first and foremost an individual struggle. We have our different individual situations, and each of us has his or her own talents and abilities to consider. Listening to the opinions of others can be valuable, but never determinative as far as I am concerned, with due respect for paying bosses and good musical group conductors.
If you are one who is happier following a leader on some of the other things I have mentioned, then you might possibly decide that you could spend a bit more time looking in the right places to find people with credentials that are respected by more than a few other people with credentials, just to help you in figuring out which of the would-be leaders to follow. [Ed: Of course I mean credentialed people who are not anti-science, to begin with.] That might be within your capacity to change. If not, well certainly my God loves you despite your incapacity, and I do try to follow.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,While at church this morning, where you can expect me to be on Sundays during choir season, I got into a conversation, with a friend there, a tall and quite articulate older man, older the way I am I mean. Given a perfect opportunity earlier, I had stood up during the service and said to all present, improving the language just slightly now, "My family has seemed to be doing ok this week, though we can always use prayers. What I am asking you all to pray for with me is the spread of the barest knowledge in the face of powerful and shared denial on some important subjects that affect all of us." My friend after church wanted to hear it from me, specifically what "denials" concerned me. So I gave him my current examples: "Climate change; the fact that Zionism and British, French, and now primarily U.S. foreign policy for the last umpteen years and ongoing have been together the primary cause of the size and the seriousness of the horrors that have been happening in the Middle East, I would say perhaps especially since the development of ocean-going sailing ships; :-| and the deterioration of the amount of real knowledge that most children across this country are acquiring--not referring to the concept of intelligence. Intelligence and knowledge are not the same thing. We discussed possible causes behind that deterioration, but those are no part of my point right here.
The courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.
The point is, those are some areas that seem to me important and in which denial reaches great statistical heights in the old U.S. of A. That saddens me.
But then we got back to the Serenity Prayer (see above). I find value in just struggling with denial whenever I get a reasonable opening. I have been able to speak my mind on occasion even if the topic is one that some or many people consider inappropriate for polite conversation. No, I am not referring to the use of impolite words per se. And denial of some important shared things is something that I feel might be within my capabilities to effect change, even of only in fairly small ways. But that is me, and my estimation.
The struggle for the "wisdom to know the difference" between what one can change and what one cannot change is first and foremost an individual struggle. We have our different individual situations, and each of us has his or her own talents and abilities to consider. Listening to the opinions of others can be valuable, but never determinative as far as I am concerned, with due respect for paying bosses and good musical group conductors.
If you are one who is happier following a leader on some of the other things I have mentioned, then you might possibly decide that you could spend a bit more time looking in the right places to find people with credentials that are respected by more than a few other people with credentials, just to help you in figuring out which of the would-be leaders to follow. [Ed: Of course I mean credentialed people who are not anti-science, to begin with.] That might be within your capacity to change. If not, well certainly my God loves you despite your incapacity, and I do try to follow.

He and I both were in the big choir group that traveled to and performed in the British Isles back then. So I knew him. He was a wonderful and entertaining man. The names of the two songs are "Never Eat Leftover Lizard," and "Names."

I subscribe to a wonderful free service called Stumbleupon. Once in awhile as part of their service they send me an email--probably an option that I chose--with links to a few of the web pages that people in my areas of interest have indicated are well worth seeing. That is where that one came from. I definitely found it well worth seeing. :-)
(P.S. Early in my college education in Psychology back when I was very young, my class was warned to avoid the temptation to take personally all of the problems we'd be reading about. It may be that very young psychology students have a shared tendency to identify every problem they read about as their own when they haven't read and observed all that much and are themselves searching for answers. I pass those words on for whatever they might be worth to you.)
2. We of the wonderful little choir with which I've been singing lately on Sunday mornings did our last performance for the season on Sunday, June 21st, nine days ago now. I would love for you to hear our performances of that day, most especially the later one. The later one was joint with the great bell choir that blesses this particular congregation, so to speak, with the bell choir conductor Kelly conducting both choirs for that performance. Do please start by listening to the very beginning. That is not some routine beginning. It was special. Brian did that. The particular bell choir and voice choir performance whereof I speak is from 13 min 35 seconds to 17 min 44 sec. I give you permission to cry during the performance. You can see me at the usual spot to the upper right, but you cannot hear me as plainly, which is a good thing. There was another big bass there by special invitation Sunday, so the bass section sound is a blend, a better sound. There were good tenors also, even though our regular lead tenor did not sing because he was playing in the bell choir right then.
Brian's sermon came later. I loved it. Heavily paraphrased: "We have no idea what is going to happen next. Some"--or maybe he said "much"--"of it is going to be hard, most likely. Whatever is going to happen, keep the feeling of being led."
OR in the voice of Larry Scott, if you can imagine--I am a bass you know: "KEEP THE FAITH, BABY!--WHATEVER happens next!"

This is pretty amazing. It is as though Dr. Avijit Roy foresaw his
death. I have known of him but only today received a copy of what
apparently was his last article, "The Virus of Faith." That article
is only four pages long and can be directly read here (link), OR here is an instant download link. I urge
you to read it and think. Dr. Roy was an engineer, a
scientist, and a famous thinker and book author who mostly lived in
the United States with his wife.

As you read, please think not only about Dr. Roy's thesis, which seems to be that terrorism might be driven away by spreading atheism as the antidote for what is called "religious extremism." Please be thinking also the "religious extremism" parallels in Christianity, among the people we pay through taxes to act the same way or worse while proclaiming themselves "Christians." And who is anyone to say that "our" paid terrorists are not Christians?
Religion as a killer virus that needs to be wiped out? I do not care to go that far. My particular religion does not, in theory, support killing--especially not with the idea of having an improved afterlife. But I do say that what is good for the goose might be considered to be good for the gander. If we want them to stop being killers filled with bad religion then is it not plain obvious that we who believe IS/ISIS/ISIL members should stop slaughtering people should also do our best to stop paying American Christian killers who are also filled with bad religion and who act the same way or worse? And should we not first physically get into the way of what "our" slaughterers do and try to calm them down whenever we have the opportunity to do so? Some of them might live closer than IS members when they're home and be more convenient to reach. I was not even talking right there about the ones who kill millions from greater distances in a business-like way.

Our friend Brian the 34+year UCC minister generally has not thought
about evil much, he said on Sunday, June 7th. That day he spoke on
the topic of evil for the first time in his long career. He said he
might have to do one or two more sermons on the topic, because, try
as he might, he had not yet been able to put a definition to the
word "evil," contrary to what had been his firm intention when he
started.
At the end of the sermon, I went up and said, "Thank you." I hope that you may take time to listen to what Brian said, putting aside as best you can any thoughts you might have about God, the Devil, and/or evil from whatever other denominations, social connections, and personal beliefs that you may have. I think it most likely that Brian has inspirations that are worth hearing for anyone who is able to follow along with his words. One of many things he said was--paraphrasing, listen for the original--there are a lot of lying news organizations these days. It is important that we look hard and learn what is real. And in another part he sounded suspiciously like he was saying once again, in the familiar words of the Quakers, "Look for that of God in everyone, [even in strange people far away]."
It is 26 minutes out of this video of the entire Sunday service, from 26:39 to 56:14 including the Bible passage reading lead-in by someone else. Or I have put a clip of just the 26 minutes for instant download, in an mp4 file that you can play locally, here. I left in the lead-in Bible passage reading by someone else just ahead the the sermon despite its having being a bit startling to me. Brian later referred to it, so it is needed for context.

I called my House Representative this morning again. He has not changed his position, opposing fast-tracking. I reiterated my support for him in holding to that position.

One way or another, raise yourself up I say; do not be afraid. If you are not doing it you can do it. Other people are doing it. We can learn from them, I find.
At the end of the sermon, I went up and said, "Thank you." I hope that you may take time to listen to what Brian said, putting aside as best you can any thoughts you might have about God, the Devil, and/or evil from whatever other denominations, social connections, and personal beliefs that you may have. I think it most likely that Brian has inspirations that are worth hearing for anyone who is able to follow along with his words.
